The key benefits of plantation shutters

INSPIRATION

When you're designing or renovating a home, your initial choice of window coverings can really set the tone for how your home is going to look, feel and function well into the future. Often, plantation shutters are seen as a 'safe' choice due to their durability and stylish aesthetic appeal that works with various different spaces. However, there are actually all kinds of other great reasons to select plantation shutters, and in particular, Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters.

Here's a quick overview of what makes them unique, how they can be used, and in which rooms and settings they're a particularly smart choice.

What are plantation shutters?

The name 'plantation shutters' originated in the south of America, where this type of slatted window covering was commonly used on the farms or estates that grew coffee, tobacco, cotton or sugar.

Originally the slats on plantation shutters were much larger than the smaller and more manoeuvrable ones you can commonly see in homes today. Over the years, they began to be referred to as California shutters or traditional shutters.

Today, plantation shutters have narrow units which are hinged accordion-style, and cover a part of the window opening when closed. Typically the louvres or slats are controlled uniformly by a tilt bar or rod to control light, air flow and visibility.

The Luxaflex range offers two types of plantation shutters: Timber Shutters, and our innovative Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters.

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters are made from a durable, non-toxic durable polyresin compound, and finished with a revolutionary technology, which gives them the soft, matt lustre look of freshly painted wood. This means you get the same look as wood, but with far greater durability.

What makes Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters unique?

While there are lots of different types of plantation shutters available here in Australia, there are several important factors that make our PolySatin® Plantation Shutters unique. This includes:

Versatility

The versatility and level of customisation really sets Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters apart from many competing window coverings. In fact, they can be completely designed to suit your home and your specific aesthetic appeal and needs.

You can choose from a wide assortment of sophisticated designs, and the shutters are available in three classic shades of white. They can also be customised with stylish valances, distinctive frames, three unique louvre sizes and tasteful hinge finishes.

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters are also highly versatile and can be custom-made to fit windows of various shapes and sizes. While there are some limitations and restrictions that apply, non-rectangular windows that Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters can be manufactured to suit include arches (half circle, half moon, quarter circle and gothic), angles (right and isosceles triangles, top and bottom sloped), hexagons and octagons.

Plus, these shutters can even be used as a versatile room divider, or a stylish solution for larger windows or sliding glass doors. They're available in a variety of different designs to accommodate this, including hinged, hinged bi-fold, bi-fold on track and by-pass on track.

Australian Made

Buying Australian made products is becoming increasingly important for anyone who is renovating or building a home, especially with delays on products that are being manufactured overseas due to COVID-19.

Ninety percent of Australians also say they would prefer to buy Australian-made where possible1 and for good reason. When you buy Australian-made, you're supporting our local workers, and the value of your purchase stays on-shore. You also get the peace of mind that your product has been uniquely designed for our environment and weather conditions.

Insulation and energy efficiency

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters are completely adjustable, allowing you to fully control the solar energy entering your windows and doors. Their cellular construction creates a layer of energy-saving insulation as it traps air within a distinct pocket. Coupled with polyresin's low conductivity, they greatly reduce heat exchange. Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters reflect inbound solar rays back to the outside during summer, however, can be opened to allow the warming sun into your home in winter thereby reducing air-conditioning costs.

Non-toxic

Made from a non-toxic polyresin compound, Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters also comply with GREENGUARD® Gold Certification standards. They have been rigorously tested and scientifically proven to emit low chemical and particle emissions, making them the ideal solution for all households especially those with young children.

Durability

Our plantation shutters are made from an advanced polyresin compound that makes them durable and easy to clean. Ink, crayon and other staining agents don't tend to stay on the smooth surface and in most cases, blemishes can be removed by merely wiping them down with a soft damp cloth. Our traditional non-motorised shutters can also be easily detached from the window by a single person within seconds and can be simply cleaned with warm soapy water.

Warranty

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters boast exceptional Australian-made quality and are backed by our famous 20-year warranty#
